I started writing in 1999 as a way to express myself without having to talk to anyone. I was an only child, so I was taught to speak when spoken to; and I wasn't heard a lot because I thought too much. Poetry gave me power with my voice. It gave me a way to, honestly, just express what I am thinking or observing in a moment. Poetry is my lifework, it is my talent, that I do not bury.
I write for all people. When I give that as my answer, people get confrontational because I should only be writing for one group of people. I should be writing only to other creatives and artists, or other black women, mothers, or people from the hoods of cities. My work has been featured in coffeehouses, open mics, slams, as well as institutions like museums, colleges and universities and in corporate spaces. I get commissioned to write for weddings and special projects that I have to sign NDA's for...I write poems. That's it. They move people, all people. I stand firmly on that statement.
